However I have tried without success to define a WIN file across a PC network. Does anyone know how to do this? Or indeed to be able to "see" any file across such a network.

I don't know if it helps but this is how it works in my case.
I have two networking machines running QPC2 under W98.

In my QL boot I have the line:
WIN_REMV 1: WIN_REMV 2: rem > this tells QPC to share the qxl.win's

To point to the qxl.win file on the other machine you can configuring SMSQ/E or,
use the direct command line:
WIN_DRIVE 7,"\\pcname\c-drive\sub_dir\qxl.win"
- pcname: the name of the other PC
- c-drive: the name of the shared drive/partition as set in Windows

Before I can actually use win7_ I make shure the other machine is accessed by navigating to that partition with Explorer or so, otherwise DIR win7_ may report "Not Found".
This way both QPC's can read/write to each others drives.
If the "other" QPC is not running, the WIN_REMV's are not needed.

QLToday once published a small program (by Jochen Merz) to change the SMSQ/E PRT settings. I adapted this to comfortably change my WIN or DOS settings from within QPC.
