Recently there was an interview in a Dutch newspaper with Wendy Hall, who is a mathematician and a member of the British advisory board for science and technology. She stated that she hated computers until she learned Basic programming on a Commodore homecomputer. She also agreed with the Dutch computer scientist Edsger Dijkstra who has said: "Once you have learned Basic, you're mentally maimed for the rest of your life.".

Probably true for most of us on this list. ;)
