I am reasonably certain that the first free slot is used.

I think this is why if you get directory corruption you can no longer add files. Something is wrong at the end of the directory so the directory cannot be extended. However existing entries tend to be OK which is why copying all the files to another empty QXL.WIN corrects the problem..
Seems to have worked in my case anyway. The "old" QXL.WIN and a backup of it on another drive continue to show the problem (as would be expected) but copying everything to a new qxl.win seems to have solved the problem, for now at least.

It was rather interesting to have a drive which I couldn't save to, claiming it was full but with umpteen MB free on it!

That QXL.WIN was on a USB pen drive which I took to Switzerland with me, updated a bit while there and then copied back to the C: drive on return. Both the pen drive and C: drive copy exhibited the same problem, as you would expect. Must have been a corruption of some kind while being used with the eeePc and pen drive while out in Switzerland (Couldn't handle the change of air!!!)

I'd made a backup before going, but I didn't want to lose what I'd done while in Switzerland.

Looks like all resolved now, but an interesting experience nonetheless.
