I don't remember that discussion, but I *know* that device is part of it, as
when I used particular 'good' filename via the network in the early days, it
failed, as length was increased by three.
The *real* limit is less three if one uses a network - and even that is longer
if one networks more than 9 machines. Has anyone? I know Leon Jaeggi did in
his short fling with QLs and his kitchen business.
Remember my "Telepen Barcoder"? This was hardware being sold by Dave Storton
(DS Enterprises) at a ZX MIcrofair. He called them 'lightpens' and sold none.
I realised what they were and bought them all at a really low price. Leon
bought all my remaining stock and was going to use them, with QLs at his tills.
I think the business folded before he did that.
Also I reduce most of my 'paths' to very limited length, as they too, of
course, are part of the filename.
Isn't it a pity that filename handling, with paths, was not done better from
the start. No-one wants novels as a filename, but the QL limit is so
ridiculously short.
I suppose it was *fine* in the microdrive days (8-)#
