Having got myself a little Android tablet computer (ancient v2.2 or so, was only
really bought because of low price) I started playing with eBooks on it.

Sorry Dilwyn, but I have to comment. You do realise that Android is Linux don't you! <Ducks and runs>
There's a first for everything Norman!

Actually your reply was extremely helpful to get me started - thanks for the info. You'll have guessed I've not ventured into this field before, so this is just dipping my toes in the water to see how it goes.

I take it the two formats you mentioned - Mobi and ePub - are the most suitable ones for this type of device? It's just a vanilla 7 inch screen little Android tablet which came with a couple of ebooks installed and I was pleasantly surprised how readable the screen was. Battery life is disappointing - the book says up to 5 hours, but with WiFi on, decent screen brightness etc I only get just over an hour. But it has a manual wifi on-off switch so once I've sussed the power saving modes I should be able to extend this. Not too bothered - it was a cheap bargain just to learn a little 'Android' and once I've mastered it I can in time look at getting a better tablet or a phone with a decent screen.

Will have a look at the Calibre download and see how I get on.
