I've had one of these 40x2 line displays lying around for years. I bought it to interface with an 8 bit cpu but never managed to get even a flicker of anything on it. I think the problem was the timing of the E pulse. The datasheet (it was a Hitachi model) stated that it had to be a minimum of 1us long, and mine was less (divided from a 2.4576MHz clock). I'm inspired to dig it out and try again (if I don't blow my tinkering budget on a Raspberry Pi first).
