Hi Geoff, Thunderbird I'd probably what you need. The address book lives on your desktop PC and not "in the cloud". Pop3 and IMAPP can be set up depending on what your ISP has given you.
There are versions for Linux, Windows and I think, Mac. I use Linux version, and have done - happily - for years. I have not tried any others as I am perfectly happy with Thunderbird.
