It made sense in the past for CRT monitors where you still got a crisp picture when you reduced the resolution (also graphics cards were not always up to the task of scaling the image in real-time), but in the days of LCDs the new solution is really better suited. Windows 8 probably doesn't even support the old mode anymore, but lacking a machine running it I can't say for sure.
