"Why shouldn't eye know what me home-city is in Cymraeg (seeing as my
nom-de-plume is(ish))? Tho' I can't remember exactly from where I
discovered it. London comes from Londinium, the Roman name for
Llundain; but where they'd got it from, any offers?"
====================================

"Ello Dave", I said on the blower, "Gotta a little one for you".

Dave is a linguist. He knows Latin and all that stuff. "Where
did the Romans get their idea for 'Londinium'? Any Ideas?" I continued.

"Dunno" came the reply -" but I know a man who does".

"They gottit from the Celts and all that lot. They had called the place
'Londo'.

Londo = 'wild' or 'bold' which could have been a personal name or the name
of the local tribe."

Our linguist friend confided that all is revealed in "The Oxford Dictionary
of English Place Names", "costs a tenner" and "was (therefore) bought by the
wife".

Footnotes: (all learned pieces have at least one)

Other things Dave has said.

1) "Computers! I'll NEVER have one - or need one."

2) "This QL thing you've got. Where can you get them, please?"

Eventually there were 2 QLs in Dave's house of course. His (JM) and Hers
(JS). Even had disk drives and extra memory. All of which illustrates what
a really good bloke he is and keeps me on topic, saves me from a flaming and
I can rest in me bed.

So, there you are Robert. Alas, it had nothing to do with (your) Offer.

PS Dave's latest teaching project concers an ancient language (not reduced
to writing). Thus, he teaches it with the aid of gramophone records.
Applicants from Bradford especially welcome - he calls it his "Pictogramme
Course". But then you all already knew that - it's just that you had
forgotten.
