But expedient I suppose because the alternative would be to either maintain two OS source code branches for non-FPU and FPU-equipped platforms, or use more ROM space with two sets of FP routines to be selected according to hardware detected at boot. (And I also believe, from a ql-users thread from a while back, that there would be the portability issue caused by the difference between QL-format and Motorola format variables.)
