Dilwyn Jones struck on a good idea in an email he sent me - a virtual QL
show.

I was telling him about Phoebus "being at" the Irish Show via MSN
Messenger, and he had the idea of having a virtual QL show - might be a
worthwhile idea, with falling atendance at QL shows as is. We'd need Fast
internet access at the venue, and webcams etc, which rules out most of the
current venues - but perfect for future Irish Shows. Could use paltalk or
something similar for the subscribers, and all anyone would have to do
would be to login when the show is on.

Tony could do a QL repair on webcam, and those not attending in the flesh
could tune in via the net. Would be even better for talks and demos (if
there were any...) :-)))

What does everyone think of this??

I will definitely be looking into this for the Irish Show next year.

<snip>

If planned properly I believe that it can be extremely successful. Speccy owners have been doing these for years. (Not to mention that it really carries no cost)
An online chat / lecture / presentation / talk type of thing could be very helpful too. I have found that people that in general don't ask question in person will definitely ask to-the-point questions on a chat.
Demos can be also really helpful. I can stream the output from the Aurora or Q40 using a vga-to-video converter and in my video-in... or we could use QPC... or VNC or something at least. Streaming technologies are great in presentations (they are the "NEXT-BIG-THING" in Marketing nowadays... or so they tell me at the uni ;-)

We could even tap into c.s.s audience... the average c.s.s reader is a sucker for these kinds of things usually :-) (A Spectrum-to-QL tutorial for example can be enough to tempt some of them)

Although a virtual show cannot really substitute a real person-to-person interaction, it could also run for days without any real cost!... Maybe a 4 weekend option? And if a real show is in progress, tap into that as well?

I think it's an excellent idea overall....
