Meths is fine - iso-propyl alcohol is the best.
However it is probably simply bad microdrive cartridges.
Clearly the system is reading boot OK - but this is a small file of
course, and can recover more easily from errors.
I am surprised it has taken so long for this problem to appear.
I had that problem from day 1 (8-)#

Maybe they have been stored near a magnetic field.

Mind you providing copies made on another QL may not work.

It is always sensible to work of backup cartridges though - it sounds
like he was using the master cartridges.
