Custom icons for waypoints are a bit of a problem. There is no "icon attached to a waypoint" in the Garmin world. It's just an id. And the id references a symbol stored in the device. Thus what ever is stored in the symbol table is shown. If one icon uses the id for custom icon 1 and uploads that icon, the next waypoint might use the same id, but other icon. The result will be both waypoints showing the last icon.

I see.  The only way would then something like downloading the current icon DB 
from the device (I guess it's possible?), merge it with the data in the 
application, and send back every icon which changed.  Hmmm, that sounds like a 
too big effort...
