Hi David,

the only thing you have to take care is the file name. On old devices this had 
to be gmapsupp.img. On newer devices like the Oregon just the extension *.img 
is important. You can have several *img files on your device. They will be 
listed in the map setup dialog of your device and can be enabled/disabled 
separately. So as long as you do not overwrite any file no harm to be done.

I would suggest to store all data that does not come from Garmin or the device 
on the SD memory. Why? Your own data (maps, gpx files and so on..) can make the 
device crash during boot time. If that data is in the internal memory you have 
bricked the device and you have to send it to Garmin with all your private 
data. If it is on the SD card, you simply remove the card.
