Hi Oliver:

Afaik, Macports provides a package system with source (also binary?) packets.
Just say 'port install foobar' in the terminal, and it will download all
dependencies, build them, and finally build the target package. Really nice if
(a) you have the developer tools installed (optional w/ OS X, on a 2nd DVD, nor
sure about the situation w/ Lion), (b) a fast box (compiling the libs and QLGT
from scratch takes ~3 hours on the G4/800, *much* faster on the Intel MacBook
pro) and (c) know more or less what you're doing. Read: the right tool for a
developer (in particular if you're coming from Solaris/Linux/...). Please
correct me if I'm wrong, didn't use it since some time...

The binary packages, otoh, are what the "mainstream" OS X user expects -
download a package from sf, run the installer, ready to go in 5 minutes. With
the drawback that there is no chance to get your personal config/library tweaks
in, if you need them (and, btw, with the extra hurdle that first the Libs
package needs to be installed - very confusing for some people!).

IMHO, the two "ways" address two different groups of users, so they both have
their, though different, value. And it's always great if more than one person
works on it - just to catch bugs!

Maybe there could be a Wiki page describing the two installation methods for OS
X?

Could also be a place mentioning the current issues on OS X (artefacts on 10.5
w/ vector maps [Qt issue], outdated Qt version [ditto], the list box issue you
sent me yesterday, missing Garmin drivers on PPC, etc.).

Just my € 0.01...

Best, Albrecht.
