On the machine with the GPS attached (server) I'll get NMEA messages if I do:

# stty -F /dev/ttyS0 4800 && cat < /dev/ttyS0

Also, if the gpsd is up and running I can telnet into the gpsd with:
# telnet localhost 2947
and start the output with
  ?WATCH={"enable":true,"raw":1};   for NMEA
or
  ?WATCH={"enable":true,"json":true};   for json output.

If I forward port 2947 from the host which has QLGT installed to the server, I 
can do the very same thing with telnet (localhost:2947) on the host.
Also cgps, gpsmon, gpspipe, etc. started on the host will connect to the remote 
gpsd on the server by addressing localhost:2947 on the host.
