I found a workaround for the problem. Splitting the img file with gmaptool
gmt -s gmapsupp.img
and joining the resulting maps again with
mkgmap --tdbfile --gmapsupp 3*img
provides a gmapsupp.img and a tdbfile which works with QLGT. Don't ask me why
it
works and how I found it.
