Hi Alan,

what you try to do is not appreciated by the maintainers of free online map
servers at all. As these maintainers do not get a flat rate and have to pay the
data traffic by the volume, leeching maps is a very cost intensive task for
them.

That is the reason why QLandkarte GT does not provide what you want. There is a
very limited way to create an offline map from the cache. Imho it's a fair use
to recycle tiles already downloaded. But you must have viewed the area on the
level you want to export before you can export it. You will notice very fast
that this limits the export to a very sensible extension, which should be kind
of acceptable for the server maintainers.

As you use version 1.4.0 there might be a bit of confusion about the level
values. In this version the value is an index into the zoom levels of a map:

level zoom level
1 1
2 2
3 4
4 8
....

with 1.4.2 the value is the zoom level as displayed by QLGT.

Of course QLGT will display what's in the cache if you have no connection to
the network. Have a look at the setup dialog to fine tune cache size and
expiration.

And you can render your own local tile storage from the OSM database, put it
into a zip file and enter the path as URL for the tile server (file:///...zip)

HTH

Oliver
