Hi Dave, usually most file formats have a limit of 4GB. And probably the file system on your SD card, too. I consider ~88MB as small.
Now for Garmin devices in detail. The more recent devices (Oregon, Dakota, 62/78,...) are able to display raster maps as well as vector maps. However Garmin sets a harsh limit on your own maps. That is 100 tiles of size 1024x1024 combined in a kmz file. If you patch the firmware you can use your own jnx format maps. The limit with those is 4GB or 55000 tiles of size 1024x1024. What ever comes first.
