Hi Chris,

The main branch of QLGT does not take the slope into account. There is a branch
by Jan Rheinländer. He is using QLGT to design and calculate electrical power
networks. In this branch the elevation is used when calculating the distance.
Maybe it's ported to the trunk one day.

However the effect of the elevation is quite negligible on hikes. The moment
the slop rises over a few degrees the path will be laid as serpentine. And this
will have a much larger influence on the total distance than the slope itself.

For the power network it's a bit different. Cables go straight up the hill. The
influence of the slope must be taken into account.

The same discussion pops up now and then in the usual discussion forums. In one
of these discussions someone copied a table:

It's German. The first column is the slope in %, the second the slope in
degree, the third is the error in %. The other 3 columns are the same with
other values. You can see the usual error is something around 1%.

Betreff: [Qlandkartegt-users] Calculating total distance with elevation data

Hi,

First of all, I would like to thank you for your effort in producing QLandkarte
GT.  It is a very handy tool to have, especially when I don't run windows.  I
was wondering, is it possible to calculate the total distance of a track with
respect to elevation?  I have a track file that I would like to find total
distance hiked when elevation is figured into the equation.  I can provide you
with the track data if that would help!

Thanks,
Chris
