as far as I know, Garmin does some kind of filtering/smoothing.
The exact algorithm is unknown to me.

QLGT just adds precisely the intervals between subsequent trackpoints.
For elevation the ascent/descent computed by this method is generally
too high. To compensate this, Oliver has implemented a median filter in
QLGT - give it a try.

>From my experience it's quite usual that ascent/descent on a track
measured by different devices varies by 10-20%.
