Hi Chris,
there is no such thing as real DEM data in Garmin maps that are not created
with the Garmin tool chain.
Some OSM based maps provide additional elevation lines, that can be used by the
devices to add elevation
information when calculating a route.
The geonames.org service is not really reliable. Sometimes I manage to get some
data with the 'demo'
account. But the received data is not very accurate.
I recommend to download some DEM data. By that you always have elevation
information without any
need to be online. There is an article in the Wiki:
