Hi Chris,
I am no OpenGL or graphics expert. Maybe the complete render process has to be
done different. But as
long as no one donates a better solution you have to live with mine.
The map canvas is composed by three layers. The map layer, the DEM layer and
the GIS layer. Each layer is
rendered independently in it's own thread. Thus all layers are rendered in
parallel. By that a modern
multicore CPU is used to it's advantage and the render process is fast, giving
a good feedback to user
interaction.
As explained in the past, the hill shading overlay is a full featured hill
shading. It's not only darkening the
south eastern slopes, as QLGT does. It's also adding structure to north western
slopes. On the one hand
side this is nice as it adds more information to the map. On the other hand
side the maps appearance is
kind of milky.
There are probably better ways to brighten or darken colors. However as the map
is calculated in parallel
the DEM layer can't influence the map colors. That would be possible if the DEM
layer waits for the map
layer to finish rendering. But then everyone would complain that rendering is
slow.
Besides I don't think that the hill shading is that bad. If you carefully fine
tune opacity and the dynamic range
(that is the second slider) you get nice results without too much of a blur.
