Lots of people use firefox for printing. It offers a nice gui where you can do scaling etc. Dunno how well it behaves wrt pixel interpolation. FWIW I'm printing maps for hiking because I'm old fashioned and don't want to carry GPS devices with me. Screen shooting and printing with firefox works well for me.
