I have just tested the following encryptions that are generated by 
ldappasswd and none of these work with my openldap 1.2.11:

md5, smd5, sha, ssha

I would like to suggest that somewhere in the qmail-ldap information there 
be a recommendation to use crypt with openldap 1.x to save other people the 
trouble of trying the other encryptions in that environment.

Your success using md5 (and failure with crypt) in the openldap 2.x 
environment should also be documented in the same place, wherever that might 
be.
