By the looks of it, you have also applied the qmail-ldap-controls patch? I
don't have an ldapcontroldn myself, and I don't use the controls patch.
Plain and basic qmail-ldap-20011001a.patch doesn't modify qmail-inject even
the slightest bit..

So, assuming that that patch is applied, the reason it would need to read
those is to perhaps determine various other file information that normally
sits in qmail/control/. I'm not sure exactly which ones (the documents with
qmail will tell you) that it uses from there, but since the control patch
removes the "need" for those files and places them in the LDAP server,
qmail-inject needs to contact the LDAP server for all of its control
information.
