This is slightly off-topic, but what PHP returns is a base 16-encoded form
of the md5 hash. The form that you see below is the binary result of an
md5 hash that has been base64 encoded and then appended to "{MD5}". PHP's
mhash group of functions is really what you should be using, or, if you
don't have that, check out the hex2bin functions in PHP's manual.
