When using openldap, I would suggest using openldap 2.0.22 (came out yesterday). It has some significant fixes against all older versions (like index corruption, ldapsearch failing when doing ldapmodify of the same object at the same time, crashing when doing ldap replace with null for new value) For the rest: I tested an old version of openldap with up to 1.000.000 objects in it, and it ran fine (even outperformed iplanet with so many objects in it). I am going to do new tests this week ...
