if you are using rebind, try to login to ldap server as the problematic user:
ldapsearch -h ldapserver -b "dc=arril,dc=net" -D "uid=aaron14,dc=arril,dc=net" -w aaron -x -L "(uid=aaron*)"
if this don't work, the LDAP server don't know the password format.
if you are not usig rebind the userPassword attribute must be accesible to the qmail.

Try setting "userPassword:{SSHA}22onNmlYVY5lUwkx0zkzb+LYODZTLp1Z" (ie. sha hash of the string 'aaron') instead. You can get the hash using slappasswd with OpenLDAP.
openLDAP is as flows.

auth_* lookup in ldap not the mail address.
