I finally found a workaround. Adding $(LDAPLIBS) to the end of ./load qmail-lspawn did not work, however directly adding -L/usr/lib -lldap -llber in the same place did work. The strange thing is that LDAPLIBS is clearly defined near the top of the Makefile: LDAPLIBS=-L/usr/lib -lldap -llber ...and I could not find anything in the Makefile that would have clobbered the LDAPLIBS variable before it got to ./load qmail-lspawn.
