i've thought about using the control patch but had the same reservations about it as the ones andre points out. however for what its worth i came up with a compromise which is to use the control files but generate them from data kept in an ldap store.

The existing control implementation is pretty inefficient and totally breaks down if the LDAP server gets lost.
