I don't the specifics in front of me but OpenLDAP has the following attribute "modifyTimestamp". I have used this before for a customer with a large messaging solution +7.5M entries, to perform housekeeping.
If I can dig up the rest I will send it to the list. By simply searching for accountStatus and modifyTimestamp, you should get what you want with minor impact to the exisiting setup.
