Why not try dovecot? It works with LDAP and Maildir, just like Courier (dovecot also supports mbox). You can set up an alternate port or server for dovecot and share the Maildirs with Courier.

because dovecot doesn't support SHA1 or SSHA1 as authentication method, as it reads directly the userPassword field instead of doing a bind :(
