Yes, relay is when you send an email for a recipient that is not local to SMTP server used. In that case, if you are not allowed in relay configuracion file (like described in the URL posted), you get a 'Relaying denied' response from server. It seems you dont have clearly enough some important mail concept that you have to know before installing and using qmail-ldap. I recomend you read very carefully http://www.lifewithqmail.org/lwq.html and http://www.lifewithqmail.org/ldap/ to make sure you have installed and cofigured your qmail-ldap correctly.
