Is qmail-send crashing or just exiting with an error message?
qmail-send should not crash if qmail-lspawn crashes on startup at least it
did not do it the last time I made lspawn crash...
So probably you hit multiple bugs.

I'm running qmail-ldap on sparc64 systems and never had issues so generic
64bit issues should not be the fault but I don't have neither an itanium
box nor am I using a RedHat installation.

Intrested to see a backtrace
