Is qmail-send crashing or just exiting with an error message? qmail-send should not crash if qmail-lspawn crashes on startup at least it did not do it the last time I made lspawn crash... So probably you hit multiple bugs. I'm running qmail-ldap on sparc64 systems and never had issues so generic 64bit issues should not be the fault but I don't have neither an itanium box nor am I using a RedHat installation.
