This has nothing todo with qmail-ldap because slapd is part of openldap.
qmail-ldap open and closes the connections correctly and since none of the
qmail-ldap processes leaks memory. I would go and ask the openldap mailing
list. Some versions of openldap did show some very bad behaviour
(especially with the bdb backend). So it may help to try different
versions and backends of openldap.
