I was getting a similar error, and discovered that in my case, the memory wasn't the issue at all.
It turns out that clamav has a config file (/etc/clamav.conf) that by default is broken - I assume this is because they want you to look at the file. Edit the config file, and comment out line 8 (Example), and then startup clamd. That should do it.
