Although I do see the file is updated with: open(VER,">$versionfile")||die "cannot write to $versionfile - $!"; print VER $SCANINFO; close(VER); There's a slight chance of the file being empty when a QS.pl fires up. I would've thought writing to a unique tmp version and then moving the file into place would be safer. That would also prevent multiple instances of QS.pl -z messing the contents up too.
