I still would appreciate some help, but here is some further information:

The specific problem seems to be related to access rights to /var/run/sophie
and var/run/sophie.pid Knowing that, I could put those files someplace that
the qscand user has access.

However, qmail-scanner-queue.pl currently expects to find the socket file at
/var/run/sophie--and I can't see where to change $SSOCKET to a different
location.

Is moving /var/run/sophie the right approach? How do I tell qmail-scanner
the location? Or, should I / how do I grant rights to the qscand user to
create /var/run/sophie?

Subject: Error getting qmail-scanner to work with sophie

I have both qmail-scanner and sophie installed.

Per the FAQ, I am trying to run sophie via daemontools.

If I launch sophie from the command line, it starts fine (even logged in as
qscand). However, it fails when launched from daemontools -- or launched as
root from command line with :

        #exec /usr/local/bin/setuidgid qscand /usr/local/bin/sophie

Sophie tries to start up, and reports all the settings. It displays "Sophie
version: 3.04rc2", and then:

ERROR : bind(f) failed in main() [Permission denied]

Can someone give me a clue as to where to look to try to solve this problem?
