I had a problem like that where the test_installation.sh -doit
script ran in the contrib directory, but real mail did not.

The problem for me was that  /usr/local/bin/suidperl did not have the
SUID perms. 

I had:   -rwxr-xr-x  and had to change it to 
         -rwsr-xr-x
