Also RFC 1123, section 5.5.3. It's a SHOULD there, but a "must"
in RFC821, section 3.6. Anyway, RFC1123 is dated October 1989,
and "is an official specification for the Internet community".

It's a SHOULD in RFC 1123... I interpret that as meaning "if
the envelope sender address is unuseable for some reason other
than being <>, one could try others."
But since there *is* a valid envelope sender, not using it is...
hmmm... shall we say... incorrect.
