I don't know if this is doable under Dan's binary packaging rules,
but if it's such a problem finding free uids, why not make several
auto_uids.so.  Install them all, then make a symlink to one that
doesn't collide.  It doesn't involve changing source code, only
link and compile options.  It's almost the same as having qmail read
uids from a file, except ld.so does it.
