Hey, this is Unix -- you can put anything but a null into .qmail
filenames.

But perhaps more apropos to your question, qmail will look for a
filename matching any email address which contains valid RFC822
characters EXCEPT dot, which is replaced by a colon while searching
for a filename.

Maybe .qmail-john, but never .qmail-default.  It depends on whether
john exists as a deliverable user (owns his home directory) or not.
Repeat the qmail mantra after me: "users control their own mail."

In spite of Dan's assertions that qmail can be dropped into place of
sendmail, you have to make sure that you have no entries in
/usr/lib/alias that override delivery to a user.
