I think your thinking on this is a little exaggerated. Doing the above
listing is analogous to scanning (with "frm" or other appropriate tool)
a mbox file for all messages that do not have a "Status:" header field.
Obviously, doing such a scan would update the atime of the mbox file, as
does your listing.
I think the idea of checking the atime of new/ is a good idea and seems
like the perfect analog of checking the atime of the mbox file.
