many thanks to those who responded.
i have made the non-existant host have an mx record for my mail server.
the prob now is that all users who had the non-existant host as their smtp
gateway will fail, since it no longer exists in dns.
oh well, i hate the stand-alone windows environment that prevents me from
making whole-sale config updates.
looks like time for ldap and roving profiles.
thanks djb, russ, etc. this is so much cooler than spendmail.
