Any idea why it needs /bin/sh twice?

say /vt./
1. To type to a terminal. "To list a directory verbosely, you have
to say ls -l." Tends to imply a newline-terminated command (a
`sentence'). 2. A computer may also be said to `say' things to you,
even if it doesn't have a speech synthesizer, by displaying them on
a terminal in response to your commands. Hackers find it odd that
this usage confuses mundanes.

If addresses given on the command line contain something funny, sendmail
expects them quoted and qmail not. See djb's message in qmail list
with Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> and

That's why I use the attached wrapper between Mutt and qmail. In Mutt set
sendmail='/some/path/muttqmail'.
#include <stdio.h>
#include <stdlib.h>
#include <unistd.h>
#include <string.h>
void nomem()
{
printf("muttqmail: out of memory\n");
exit(111);
}
void removequote (char *d, char *s)
{
char c;
do
{
c = *s++;
if (c != '\"')
{
if (c == '\\')
c = *s++;
*d++ = c;
}
}
while (c != '\0');
}
void main(int argc,char **argv)
{
char **newargv;
char **arg;
int i;
newargv = (char **) malloc((argc + 1) * sizeof(char *));
if (!newargv) nomem();
arg = newargv;
*arg++ = "/var/qmail/bin/qmail-inject";
for (i = 1;i < argc;++i)
{
*arg=malloc((strlen(argv[i])+1)*sizeof(char));
if (!*arg) nomem();
removequote(*arg,argv[i]);
arg++;
}
*arg = NULL;
execv(*newargv,newargv);
printf("muttqmail: unable to run qmail-inject\n");
exit(111);
}
Hi
I have a little (humm) problem.
I'm using qmail. When the mails arrive, it's dispatched in
all the users mailboxes. Ok.
Now, what I want to do is to forward the mails if they are
not read after one hour (for instance).
I'm not sure it is clear, so here is an example :
Mail #1 arrive at 9H00AM to Joe.
Joe is not here today.
I want that this mail to be forwarded at 10h00AM
to Bill.
Is there any program doing that ?
TIA

Nothing in the standard qmail distribution, or anywhere else that I
can think of. But qmail makes it easy for you, if you can use maildir
format: Have Joe run a cron job, say once every 15 minutes, that
looks for messages in Maildir/new older than one hour. Any such
messages are forwarded and then moved elsewhere (so they don't
forwarded again). A simple shell script should do the job:
#!/bin/sh
find Maildir/new -type f -mtime +1 -print |
while read m; do
/var/qmail/bin/qmail-inject -a bill && mv $m Forwarded/new
done
The forwarded message should inherit the original's envelope sender
(picked up from the Return-Path field). Override with -f if you
prefer. You should also be aware that qmail-inject does some error
checking and header processing that is not totally appropriate for
mail forwarding. In particular, if the incoming mail has syntax
errors in the headers (not an unheard of situation) the above script
will fail. A better solution might be to use forward, but then you
have to set up the environment variables that forward expects, so this
is harder to do.

There is a race condition here. Move the file before you run qmail
inject on it. If the qmail inject fails, move it back.

Careful, or a crash at the wrong moment might cause a mail to be moved
but not forwarded. I think the race condition you are refering to is
more benign: It might cause a message to be forwarded more than once
(extremely unlikely), or a qmail-inject or mv to fail because the
message was yanked under the script's feet (more likely, since the
user may be reading his mail at the same time the cron job is
running). In fact, even moving the message first does not get rid of
this latter sort of race condition, since there is a time interval
between find discovering the file and the mv command running (or
between the user's MUA seeing the file and trying to move it). If the
MUA is not able to cope with the possibility of a message disappearing
like that, then the user must precede the reading of his mail by
first moving the messages using a more fault tolerant program. My
simple script could also need some work in that area. I never
intended it to be a complete solution, just a reasonable starting
point.

Why not chmod +t the home directory, then check, then chmod -t it to
defer mail delivery problems. Also, in the case of qpopper, you can touch
/var/spool/mail/.user.LCK (I believe that is the name) to temporarily
stop them from checking their POP mail. The odds of them checking in the
half second it takes to scan the mail box is unlikely so these
precautions are really just safety nets. If something wants to stop
working bad enough, it always does :)

You can do it (slightly) easier using my addition to serialmail:
maildircmd. Put the following command in your crontab:
maildircmd ~/Maildir hanche '{ test $AGE -gt 3600 && qmail-inject recip } || exit
111'
The idea behind maildircmd is to implement spool-and-process mail
handling, instead of on-receipt handling as with procmail or
maildrop. It eliminates the need for lockfiles, and permits
.qmail-style filters.
You can download maildircmd at
<http://www.pobox.com/~lbudney/linux/software/maildircmd.html>.

Of course. I intentionally left out the part about running an
occasional cron job (or some such) to check for orphans. We need to
leave some exercises for the reader.

Agreed. The user of the script should be aware of the race conditions
in any case.

Either procmail or maildrop has started a child process, presumably for the
purpose of filtering the message, and the child process is hanging.
qmail-filter is waiting for the mail filter to finish by reading the output
of the filter, until the output file descriptor is closed. It will not
wait for the child process until its output has been closed.
So, something still has the file descriptor open. Examine your filtering
recipe.

Maybe you have the virtual domain in control/locals.
If so, remove it, then HUP qmail-send once more.

Hi!
My setup:
Linux 2.0.34, RH 5.1, tcsh 6.06, qmail 1.03
Problem/Query: (see below for reference)
1. Why is the 'From: ' line not changed when the return-path and from
lines show the changed address?
2. Why are the mysterious quotes added in the address for 'From: '
line? What could be the reason that those quotes are only added around
'48]'? Is there any reason that the backslash be added before [ or ]?
3. Is there anything I can do to avoid the quotes in the address part?
Thanks

Hey,got the Virtuam domain thingy worked out now,
but whats the format of the file (and wich file) that controlsthe
aliases ?- sorry to ask but my man page's is broken .. sucks.
in short, how do i setup alias under virtual domains?
thanks,
daniel.
[Julian Brown]
In the assign file under your users directory, add a line that is similar
to the other entries with an exception: use a + instead of an = and set
the directory where the mail is dropped
to the directory of the account you wish to alias to
hey all,
i saw some questions about it before, but was anyone ever successful in
getting a virus scanner to work? (what was that one called? vm...
something)

tcp-wrappers is no longer supported. You're best off with tcpserver
which can be found at:

I pulled that line from the FAQ with regards to qpop3d.
I'll try this and report back to the list.

I'm having problems with qpop3d and accepting passwords longer then 8
characters. I'm running PAM 0.64 with the bigcrypt encryption algorithim.
Anything shorter then 8 char will be accepted.
Very weird, because I had it working before.

What is the best pop to use after qmail-pop3d then? I'm trying to avoid
qpopper as it copies the files over. Anyone else using anything else?
Thanks.

Hmm I'm using qmail-pop3d myself but I've heard lots of good stuff about cucipop [from
the people who brought you procmail]. You may need to license it for commercial use
though.. ftp://ftp.cuci.nl/pub/cucipop-1.31.tar.gz
Oh.. and it has humor too :)
Also, Cistron (the people who brought you cistron radiusd) is running a popper of
their own make, with maildir _and_ mbox support. I think they're planning to release
it anytime soon...
oh.. and please answer _under_ the message your replying to next time :)
For any more hints, go check out http://freshmeat.net/appindex/daemons/pop3.html
[the cucipop testimonials speak for themselves]
I don't know of any available popper with maildir support apart from qmail-pop3d,
though :(

QPopper is a classic and personal favorite. Not the most feature packed

I've implemented the "fixup" which appends the hostname
of the server to incomplete email addresses for mail clients
like Eudora which allow people to enter just a username
instead of a complete email address.
My problem now is that since it puts in the full hostname
of the server, it defeats the purpose of our server array
since the messages are directed towards a specific server
instead of to our array so it can be load balanced.
What I'd like to know is can a domain name be hard-coded
in the fix? I assume this would be done in the
~alias/.qmail-fixup-default file. Right now, QMail will rewrite
broken addresses to be [EMAIL PROTECTED] and
I want to force it to write the address as [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Is this possible? I've tried changing this line:
| [ "@$HOST" = "@fixme" ] || ( echo Permission denied; exit 100 )
to something like this:
| [ "@domain.com" = "@fixme" ] || ( echo Permission denied; exit 100 )
with no luck. Is there something I can do to fix this?
Also, am I correct that this fix only affects emails that contain
incomplete email addresses (i.e. username without "@domain.com")?

You probably haven't created control/defaulthost with your domain name
in it. It should cure your problem, I think.

Yes, if the mail comes in with blatantly wrong addresses and you want
qmail-inject to change them. But my impression from your problem
descrition is that messages come in without a domain in the from
addresses, and then defaulthosts will take care of that.
To force another address, use the line
|QMAILINJECT=f QMAILHOST=domain.com qmail-inject -f "$SENDER" -- "$DEFAULT"
| I've tried changing this line:
|
| | [ "@$HOST" = "@fixme" ] || ( echo Permission denied; exit 100 )
|

|
| | [ "@domain.com" = "@fixme" ] || ( echo Permission denied; exit 100 )

Indeed; that test will always fail. You just turned off the access
control to your script. Just change it back. You changed the wrong
line anyhow.
| Also, am I correct that this fix only affects emails that contain
| incomplete email addresses (i.e. username without "@domain.com")?
Yes, unless you set the QMAILINJECT variable like above. If you do
set it, you will always override the sender's wishes, which may or may
not be what you want to do.

way to do the last part without the tcp "plugin" - server whatever and
i need to run qmail without it...

What exactly do you mean?

In /var/qmail/rc, or whatever script you use to start qmail-send, change
./Mailbox to ./.Mailbox

He probably means how to set RELAYCLIENT without the benefit of tcpserver.
That's rather easy. Instead of inetd running qmail-smtpd, have inetd run a
shell script, which runs qmail-smtpd. Before running qmail-smtpd, have the
shell script set the RELAYCLIENT environment variable by itself.

Greetings,
I recently converted to qmail (from Netscape's Novonyx) using Maildir,
tcp-server smtp and qmail-pop3d. The client PC's are either Windows NT or 95
using Netscape Communicator as the mail user agent (pop3). It takes considerably
longer for the clients to "get messages" from the server, can anyone give my a
tip on what to tune or look for.
Thanks,
Rick

This may sound stupid, but some of my tolerat--erm... "much loved" users
complained about how slow it took for messages to be delivered
inter-office, and it was because they were polling the pop3 server every
15 minutes. They were used to Exchange server's instantaneous (push)
delivery of mail.

[ Disclaimer: I cannot be responsible for the eternal soul of anyone
who tries the following. You *have* been warned. ]
Try munging qmail-pop3d so that it always reports that one more piece
of mail is available than really exists. When the client software
tries to download it, send them nothing -- just hang. Wait for a
single character to be written to a named pipe. When that character
arrives, open the first piece of mail you see, and send it to them.
Write that character to the pipe using a .qmail file like this:
./Maildir/
|echo >Maildir/.waiton
Then tell them to poll the pop3 server every zero minutes.

There is a Netscape setting to check for mail every 15 minutes, I'll change that
to every minute and see if that changes their perception.
Thanks,

Why, oh why, do popular mail readers insist on polling? Transmitting
small authenticated messages to signed-on users was a solved problem
10 years ago with Zephyr.

you would be wise to do it every 1 minute, if they are using Eudora,

Hmm well Russells point is that the mailclient starts checking mail as soon as it's
done checking mail, and have the pop3d block until new mail comes in.. To make this
really work, the mailclient should check pop mail as often as possible.

You also should check if your dns server can resolve your clinet's ip
address, otherwise it waits for a timeout (I think that one is 26 secs).

Okay, I've gotten to the bottom of my problem, and here's what
I've done to fix the problem.
First of all, the DNS lookup that was failing was not on the
bastion host, but at the final recipient, which looked up the header From:
and couldn't find the host. But the only reason the host was on that line
and not the domain (which resolves just fine, thank you very much) was
that I sent my mail from 'root', which is on sendmail's "don't masquerade
this user" list. Sending from normal users works just fine, because their
"From:" header uses "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" rather than
"[EMAIL PROTECTED]", where "mailhost" is the internal mail server
not found under DNS.
Presumably the "RELAYCLIENT" setting of tcp wrappers was
satisfying qmail, and I just misread the logs the first time around.
Secondly, by using tcp wrappers control file (/etc/tcp.smtp.cdb),
I'm now setting TCPREMOTEHOST and TCPREMOTEIP to values that do not give
away information about our internal layout. This changes the "Received"
lines on the mail. So, mail actually comes from "mailhost.scansoft.com"
at 4.17.150.119, but the headers say it came from "mail.scansoft.com" at
"192.168.0.1" (an RFC address). The only thing these mail headers are
used for is debugging, and debugging the steps that include these hosts is
only usefully done by us, so presumably this won't mess things up.
Sendmail on the interior host also munges to use
"mail.scansoft.com" in the "Received" headers.
This means mail from non-masquerading users (root and daemon) may
never get delivered if final hosts try to match the name, but frankly,
mail to the outside world should be by accountable users only.
All this achieves my goal of sending mail from an internal host
not listed in DNS without having to reveal information about that internal
host.
Can anyone let me know if munging the Received headers in a
controlled way like this breaks anything? I wouldn't think so from my
knowledge of most mail systems, but you never know...

Actually, the question is what is happening.
What is happening is that you have upgraded the kernel on 2.2.3 by
yourself, because, as far as I know, there are no official RPMs to rev up
your kernel to the 2.2 tree.
So, you must've installed the 2.2 kernel by yourself, somehow.
The include files, which include errno.h, containing the missing
declarations, are part of the kernel-headers package, which you either blew
away, or scribbled over, as part of the upgrade. No telling which, without
knowing exactly how you rev-ed yourself up to a 2.2 kernel. The only thing
that puzzles me is that you should've gotten compiler errors complaining
about missing include files.
Generally, if you insist on mucking around with the system yourself,
instead of upgrading via RPMs, you should be prepared to investigate
breakages like this one, by yourself, because only you know what you did.
I have no problems whatsoever compiling and installing Qmail -- even
building my own RPMs -- on Red Hat 5.2, with kernel-2.0.36-0.7,
kernel-headers-2.0.36-0.7, and kernel-pcmcia-cs-2.0.36-0.7.

Your errno.h is broken.. on my system, it's in /usr/include, there it includes
/usr/include/linux/errno.h which includes /usr/include/sys/errno.h
I'm starting to get used to RedHat being broken (happily running slackware here :),
so this is not surprising to me :)

Red Hat is not broken. The individual in question broke Red Hat by shoving
kernel 2.2 in there, breaking something in the process.
P.S. Actually, linux/errno.h includes asm/errno.h, with asm being a soft
link to /usr/src/linux/include/asm, which contains the real errno.h to
match the current running kernel (which hasn't changed much, over the
lifetime of the 2.0 kernel).
#include <errno.h>
always worked for me...

umm yeah it is broken. At least, I consider it broken [to wit, last time I told that
on a mailinglist the first person to respond pointed out that RH is DOA, not
defective :)]
I've written software in C that compiled cleanly on my Slackware, on LinuxPPC and
others, but not on RedHat. It turns out it needed -lcrypt. Does _not_ make sense to
me.

You can make the same argument the other way. There is no formal set of
specifications as to what library contains which functions, at least under
Linux.
My sqwebmail CGI client will happily compile with shadow password support
on both Slackware and Red Hat boxes, with or without crypt() in a separate
library. This is a non issue. Apart from a few lines in a configuration
file, I don't really lose much sleep over it. I don't care much for
religious wars (well, most religious wars), so I just stick the lone macro
into configure.in, and move on to something else.

Huy Guys! (and Gals!) ... it's me again.
I'm trying to stop the massive amount of spam that I've started to
receive... so I've fiddled with sendmail 8.9.3 and qmail 1.03
I have this working:
smtp stream tcp nowait qmaild /usr/sbin/tcpd /var/qmail/bin/tcp-env
/var/qmail/bin/qmail-smtpd
rblsmtp install says:
10. Insert rblsmtpd before the real SMTP server in your tcpserver line.
For example, with sendmail, you can run
# tcpserver -v 0 25 rblsmtpd sendmail -bs &
See rblsmtpd.0 and antirbl.0 for further documentation.
My question is: can rblsmtp be run without tcpserver?

but two days ago some bastards started to relay using the server ...
I have no idea how they managed to do so with my server`s having

they only way I could have stopped them from relaying is setting up a ipfwadm

side ...
I would really appreciate any help ...
they already have relayed helllotta spam ):

And what your logs say? If these e-mails are not logged, then
you did not relay.

It looks like this Received is forged. Most probably they are
trying to hit _you_. Just an average spammer's revenge.

Hi,
I set up a mini qmail on a firewall system and have a few questions
about it.
First the setup:
I installed only qmail-smtpd, qmail-qmqpc and splogger on the firewall.
I made qmail-queue a symbolic link to qmail-qmqpc, as described in the
howto that I read somewhere (probably koobera:) I created a qmqpservers
file which has the IP address of the system that email needs to be
forwarded to.
This setup works rather well and easy, and is very small.
Questions:
- I would like to have qmail-qmqpc route mail to different qmqp servers
based on domain name. To the FW is MX for domain 1 and 2,
each domain has it's own 'behind the firewall' mailserver. Is this
do-able?
- What are good motivations to have the miniqmail installation on a
bastion
host in the DMZ instead of on the firewall system itself?
Thank,
Fred Leeflang

Hi !
Please where can I get explanation about how to create with ezmlm a ML on a
virtual domain that I host (I am MX for this domain). I only succeed to
create one on my own domain.
Thank you very much !
Bye !
Please also send me a private copy of the response, thank you =)
My machine running qmail-1.03 can be heavly loaded by opening
as much as possible concurrent connections and flooding with RSET
and NOOP commands.
It is possible to close connection after receiving i.e. 100 NOOPs or RSETs?
