No qmail reader cares, but other qmail writers might be writing "welcome.message". Sticking with the standard of timestamp.pid.hostname guarantees that it'll work. Of course, if you *know* you have no hostnames named "welcome", and you can guarantee that no other qmail writer is configured with a pseudo-hostname of welcome, then *anything* ending in .welcome will work just fine.
