I have you tried to manually log in to the pop3 server?
Try this:
You The Server

telent <host> 110 --> +OK <xxxx@host>
user <name> --> +OK
pass <passwd> --> +OK
list --> {output depends on your mail}
quit --> +OK
See what happens.
