    Your problem is that you are not using PAM authentification scheme on
your system. I had the same problem while running Slackware 3.4.0. I
switched to RedHat (which has PAM support) and turned out to work fine :)
PAM accepts logins with dots in it and logins longer than 8 characters (way
longer :)).
