Shadow Password and checkpassword

Hi!
        After looking through the archive, is checkpassword able to authenticate 
shadow passwords?  I've got a RH 6 box running qmail, but I don't seem to 
be able to authenticate through pop3.

        Please do advise, I'm close to ripping my hair out ;-)
